Learning to embrace the small sparks of joy in everyday life
Why is it so hard to receive and feel the joy of something good happening?
Why do we struggle to appreciate life’s simple, beautiful moments?
So often, I find myself waiting for blessings to arrive as grand gestures—moments that will transform everything in the blink of an eye, like a scene from a fairy tale. But what if joy lies in the quiet, subtle sparks that don’t need to be grand to be life-changing?
I had a misconception about what good things should look like and failed to notice when I was blessed with the small sparks of magic that life sprinkled around me. They weren't loud, bright, or glorious and didn’t need to be. They were quiet, subtle, and easy to miss because I wasn't paying attention.
But now I understand that the magic is in this morning’s extra smooth coffee and the simple joy of ordering takeout for dinner. It is in the luck of being invited to a party where my son’s favorite local singer performed, and in the warmth of a sunny day spent outside.
There are also the little sparkles of joy that come from within, like the realization that this morning, I dedicated my yoga and meditation practice to enjoyment, “I am joy,” I repeated while taking slow, deep breaths. And then, as if by magic, I stumbled upon Morgan Harper Nichols’ Instagram post, which inspired this journal entry. Her bright yellow post was about enjoying the small, good things:
“I hope something unexpectedly good finds you today… even if it’s in the smallest way.”
And there it was — my bright yellow journal, waiting for me to open it and say hello. Earlier, I had been struggling, searching for inspiration, wanting to write but feeling blocked. I was fighting with myself, pushing through the resistance. In the struggle, another of Morgan’s quotes popped up:
“Be still, trust that in the waiting, more will be revealed.”
So I did. I sat still, and this post revealed itself, unfolding quickly. Once I realized that regular blessings often come in tiny doses of magic, I began to receive them.
Take a moment to reflect on your tiny sparkles of magic.
Where do they show up for you?
What quiet, subtle moments of joy await you to notice and receive?
Remember, sometimes, it’s in the smallest things that the greatest blessings are found.
